No group minimum required to sign up!

From the Rancheros to the 49ers, learn about the early days of California! Take home some treasures!

– Native Village: Wikkiup building, corn grinding, and overview of local native history

– Adobe Brick Making: with an overview of California Missions

– Gold Panning and sluicing: Find out how to identify real gold and learn the miner’s panning technique

– Music & Hoedown: Folk dancing with jug band participation

– Rope Making & Rope Games: Simple mechanics, some twine, and a little elbow grease is all it takes to make a rope! Then we’ll prepare to be cowboys by learning how to lasso! And then we’ll see who can win a game of tug o’war

– Mountain Man Camp: Visit the lonely camp with the lean-to shelter and help identify the different furs and hides

– Petting Zoo: Come see some of the animals that were needed on the farm. There are also a few animals that you would not find on a farm that our mountain man traded for!

– Gift Shop will be open!

This is a hands on educational field trip and fun for kids of all ages, as well as adults!

Open Sign-up Prices:
(no group minimum requirement)

$25 per child aged 4 – 17
$15 per adult aged 18
Kids 3 and under are free to accompany a paying adult

If you have a group of 25 students or more, and would like to schedule your own day for a field trip of your choice at a lower rate, please feel free to contact us!

Become a Master Composter! The five-week Master Composter course provides training in the art and science of composting. The course includes lectures, guest speakers, demonstrations, and a field trip.

Minimize your carbon footprint. Keeping food and yard waste out of the landfill reduces harmful methane gas emissions.
Use this “waste” to create amendments for your garden. Compost use reduces the need for synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.
Reduce water use and increase water retention. Compost increases your soil’s water-holding capacity and improves water retention.

The Master Composter course provides training in the art and science of composting. The course includes lectures, demonstrations, and a field trip. The course covers the following topics:

Traditional composting
Compost bin building and troubleshooting (in teams!)
Vermicomposting
Bokashi
Bugs in your compost pile
Environmental impacts
Much more!

Master Composter certification requires attendance at all 5 classes, as well as 30 volunteer hours of related community service. Meet new people in this fun, hands-on course and develop your composting knowledge, all while serving your community! Class size is limited.

This class will meet Saturdays from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM:

Week 1 – May 7
Week 2 – May 14
Week 3 – May 21
[No class on Memorial Day weekend]
Week 4 – June 4
Week 5 – June 11

Residents of unincorporated San Diego County will receive preferential registration. All others will be placed on a waitlist and apprised of space available 1-2 weeks before the start of the course.

SPECIAL OFFER! All participants will receive a free kitchen scrap container* after attending the first two classes.

Class graduates will receive their choice of the following*: 1 Soil Saver traditional compost bin, or 1 Wriggly Wranch vermicompost bin.

Backyard Composting Basics Workshop
June 11th, 2022 – 9:30 AM through 11:30 AM
Location: The Water Conservation Garden

Want to learn how you can improve the quality of your soil, reduce waste and air pollution, while saving energy, money, and water? Learn how to compost in your backyard!

Join Solana Center for this 2-hour presentation, at the Water Conservation Garden, where you will learn the basics of traditional backyard composting. Using trial-tested advice and interactive demonstrations, our experienced educators will teach you all you need to know to get started with a bin that fits your needs and lifestyle.

This workshop will be held in-person and outdoors. We ask that all attendees follow current public health guidelines to protect themselves and others from the spread of Covid-19, including wearing a mask if you have not been vaccinated.

Priority registration is offered to residents of unincorporated County. All other registrants will be placed on a waitlist initially and accepted into the workshop pending available space. Please look for a notification 1 – 2 weeks before workshop date.

In this workshop, we will cover the following:

What is composting and why it is so important
What tools and materials you’ll need
Which items are compostable and which are not
Building and maintaining a compost pile
