Event Details

Learn how to protect your local watershed and produce a fantastic soil amendment from manure. This webinar will demonstrate managing manure from a small amount of livestock.

Improper disposal of manure is unsightly, breeds flies, and can create health issues for your livestock. It also can contaminate local water sources. Using composted manure on your garden and landscaping conserves water, mitigates erosion, sequesters carbon, and can help your plants thrive.

There are two opportunities to learn with us:

Wednesday, June 17th, 2020 6:00 – 7:00 PM & Saturday, June 20th 2:00 – 3:00 PM

Come join us as we virtually visit Ramona’s International Equestrian Center to watch a compost pile build in process and visit with site manager, Nancy Zadrozny. This webinar will address manure composting for a large amount of livestock, for instance, 30 horses.

Nancy Zadrozny is a 33-year resident of San Diego Country Estates (the Estates) and the manager of the Estates’ Equestrian Centers and Landscape Department. She has applied her background in horticulture and ecology, along with 15 years experience as vice president of an engineering construction firm, to build a vibrant and successful composting program in her community.

Following County guidelines for environmental compliance, the process in its current form produces 50 CY of finished compost every two weeks. The finished product is made available free to the Estates’ homeowners and is widely used for gardening, mulching and erosion control.

In this webinar, we will cover the following topics:

– Manure composting*

– Benefits of composting

– Protecting local water sources

– Preventing odors and flies

*Please note that the basics of composting will be covered very briefly during this webinar. For more in-depth information on composting, please register for one of our Backyard Composting webinars. If you are unable to attend these, we anticipate scheduling similar webinars in the upcoming months, and recommend reading our Compost It Yourself guide.
