As an annual tribute to members of the United States Armed Forces who have given their all in service to their country, three Memorial Day ceremonies will be presented May 28 by local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3783.

The first service will be at 10 a.m. at Nuevo Memory Gardens, 532 Ash St., where veterans’ graves will be marked with individual American flags. Other ceremonies will follow at the World War II Memorial at the ball field on Ninth Street, and at the Vietnam War Memorial at Schwaesdall Winery, 17677 Rancho de Oro Dr., off Highway 67.

After the services, a picnic at the Post, 2247 Kelly Ave., will conclude the day of remembrance.

Buddy Poppies Help Vets

The VFW conducted its first distribution of Buddy Poppies before Memorial Day in 1922. Within two years, the VFW was granted a trademark for the name, helping to guarantee that all Buddy Poppies are the genuine products of the work of disabled and needy veterans.

Proceeds provide financial assistance to the veterans who assemble the poppies, help maintain state and national veterans’ rehabilitation and service programs, and support the VFW National Home for Children.

Starting Friday, May 25, and continuing over Memorial Day weekend, look for Buddy Poppy donation points at local stores, staffed by representatives of VFW Post 3783 and Ramona High School NJROTC cadets.
