Fundraiser To Benefit Gold Star Kids Program
The Special Liberty Project, founded in 2016 by Ramona residents Cory and Jessica Merritt, was recently presented with a check for $500 from the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3783 Auxiliary to benefit their nonprofit organization.
On April 11, the Special Liberty Project and the VFW will team up to host a teriyaki dinner fundraiser at the Post, 2247 Kelly Ave., with seatings at 6 and 7 p.m. Dinner is $10, and will include teriyaki chicken, rice, stir-fried vegetables, pot stickers and a special dessert.
Proceeds from the event will support the Special Liberty Project’s Gold Star Corps program, which focuses on providing mentorship to children of fallen service members.
Since the nonprofit’s inception, it has served veterans around San Diego County, and recently opened a branch in Arizona.
Jessica Merritt says that they were inspired to create the Gold Star Corps program during an event last year that took wounded veterans on a turkey hunt in Julian. Her two children, who went along on the hunt, formed bonds with the participants, and she realized that while they had a father who would return from service and take them on recreational outings, not every child had that opportunity.
“It sparked an interest to create a program for kids that won’t have the chance to do those things again,” she says.
Fishing, camping and wood-working are just some of the planned activities, with Gold Star kids pairing up with veterans as their mentors. Logistics for their next outing are in the works, but Merritt says it will take place locally.
