INSTRUCTOR : DON WEEKE

DESCRIPTION : Starting with a cleaned 8 – 10in. gourd, participants will complete a gourd vessel with a coiled top. They will learn the basics of gourds – gourd preparation, pyrography, adding color, and basketry. Gourd preparation will include methods for opening the gourd and cleaning the gourd inside and out. Pyrography, the use of wood burning tools with a variety of tips, will be used to burn in designs or add surface texture. Color is then added using dyes, inks or acrylic paints. Finally, a rim or top will be coiled using date palm inflorescences.

PARTICIPANTS MATERIALS LIST : scissors, ruler, darner needle, (optional) electric drill and drill bits, needle nose pliers, and wood burning tool if you already have one.

This workshop on June 17th is $60 for JAG members and $75 for non-members.  It is for a minimum of 6 people and a maximum of 12.  It is on a first pay basis. Send your checks to JAG, P.O. Box 494, Julian, CA 92036.  The workshop will be from 10 to 5 at a local studio.
