Event Details

District 7 of the California State Old Time Fiddlers Association, the Julian Chamber of Commerce, and key members of the Julian community, are proud to present the 2017 Julian Fiddle & Pickin’ Contest on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at Town Hall in the historic gold-mining town of Julian, CA.  Preceding the contest on Friday, May 19th, a special workshop on Texas-style fiddling will be led by two-time Grand Master Fiddler, Matthew Hartz (Click HERE for details).

Building on the decades-long history of the former Julian Banjo and Fiddle Contest, the Julian Fiddle and Pickin’ Contest provides fiddlers, guitarists, ‘ukulele, mandolin and banjo pickers an opportunity to demonstrate their abilities in a festive, friendly atmosphere.   It is one of the most exciting and fun acoustic music happenings in Southern California, attracting musicians from near and far not just for the “competition,” but equally for the wonderful Julian atmosphere and jamming opportunities that accompany the event.  There is no fee to watch the contest, and if you’re looking for a bluegrass jam, then head over to Miners Diner (across from Town Hall), and if your interest is Appalachian old-time music, then Granny’s Kitchen (the south end of Main Street) is where to go.

Music reigns in Julian, so come on out May 19th (for the workshop) and May 20th for some good times, good food and great music!
