Charlene Pulsonetti – Ramona Home Journal / Thu, Dec 27, 2018
Though raptors soar high above Ramona and the backcountry, it’s a rare opportunity when humans come face to face with local birds of prey and masters of the sky.
These fascinating creatures are celebrated every Saturday in January and February at Hawk Watch, hosted by the nonprofit Wildlife Research Institute, which aims to educate the public about conservation and wildlife appreciation.
Those who attend the free event at Begent Ranch, 18528 Highland Valley Rd., are sure to enjoy a morning in the great outdoors, observing wintering and resident raptors, such as golden eagles, red-shouldered hawks and burrowing owls from a distance — and close up.
WRI biologists are eager to share their knowledge during this special outreach event. Visitors are encouraged to bring binoculars, and spotting scopes will also be available.
Programs begin at 10 a.m., with a recommended arrival time of 9:30 a.m. Refreshments will be provided. Visit www.wildlife-research.org.
As a special treat, several trained raptors will be on-site for demonstrations — offering a unique chance to see these birds of prey up close.
Hawk Watch offers an opportunity to appreciate the inhabitants of our environment, many of which soar with feathered fervor in Ramona’s big, blue skies.

Event Details
The Julian Historical Society was incorporated in 1963, when local historians got together to preserve Julian’s past for future generations. Over the past 50 plus years much has been done toward their original goal. They began by purchasing the Washington mine. The Washington mine was the first hard rock mine to produce gold in Julian. The open air viewing museum constructed in the early 1960’s, where the founders built it, is at the mine site, along with tools and artifacts they collected to tell the story of mining in Julian. (Tour by appointment only.)
